Description
Circa 1851–1857 Open Pontil Patent Medicine Bottle
An outstanding, attic-fresh example of an original mid-19th-century patent medicine bottle from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This highly collectible 8-sided rectangular variant features distinct beveled corners and a deeply recessed front panel vertically embossed with crisp, bold graphics:
"DR. D. JAYNE'S / ALTERATIVE / 84 CHEST ST PHILA"
.
The "84 Chest St" address marks a precise dating window, identifying it as an early production piece from the short window after Dr. Jayne built his flagship headquarters but before Philadelphia renumbered Chestnut Street in 1857.
The History Behind the "Alterative":
In the 19th century, an "alterative" was a premium systemic tonic formulated to "purify" the blood, as Victorian-era medicine attributed most chronic illnesses to impurities in bodily fluids. Dr. David Jayne marketed this concoction as a miraculous cure-all for severe conditions, including skin diseases, liver complaints, and respiratory illnesses. While advertised as a natural herbal blend, these early unregulated formulas typically relied on a high percentage of alcohol, molasses, and chemical compounds like potassium iodide. It stands as an evocative piece of early pharmaceutical history from the golden age of American patent medicines.
Condition:
Outstanding "attic-mint" condition. Completely free from chips, cracks, or glass sickness. Never dug; the glass remains bright, clean, and beautifully reflective.
Glass Character:
Rich aquamarine color showing striking whittled surface texture, hand-tooling lines, and trapped air seed bubbles typical of mid-1800s mold-blown glass.
Base & Lip:
Features a sharp, classic circular blowpipe open pontil scar on the base and a beautifully crude, hand-applied double collar lip finish.
