Synopsis
A Marked Man is a blend of memoir and true-crime account of the events surrounding the 1994 assassination of NSW MP John Newman and the conviction of Vietnamese-Australian politician Phuong Ngo. Carlotta McIntosh attended all the court hearings and, after following the story for more than three decades, has become convinced that Ngo was wrongly convicted. Ngo, a former refugee and community leader in Cabramatta, rose swiftly through local politics but became locked in a bitter rivalry with Newman, a volatile and divisive figure. When Newman was gunned down, Ngo was ultimately convicted—despite inconclusive evidence, no clear motive, and multiple trials. McIntosh questions whether justice was served and sheds light on a critical moment in Australian political history.

About the Author
Carlotta McIntosh is an Australian journalist and creative nonfiction author. Over two decades, she reported for Fairfax suburban papers,  Australian Associated Press, ABC Radio (in Southeast Asia), and the Illawarra Mercury. Known for her deep connection to southwest Sydney, she transitioned from traditional news reporting to literary storytelling, most notably A Pig and a Tram,  which has been translated into Spanish. In her latest, A Marked Man: The Questionable Conviction of Phuong Ngo, McIntosh delves into power, race, and the ambiguous boundaries of justice.
