This writer’s family was on its way to McKinnon where our grandmother lived and in Dandenong Rd crowds had gathered to watch competition in the Olympic Games 50-kilometre walk. Finding a suitable vantage point would not have been easy, but who gets to watch an Olympic event gratis? The walk was won by a New Zealand competitor, Norman Read, in a time of four hours, 30 minutes, 42.8 seconds. It was a warm day for late spring, with a maximum temperature of 87.9 degrees Fahrenheit (31 degrees Celsius).      On a much cooler day, July 1, 1961, and devoid of crowds, this writer travelled by train to Glen Waverley for the first time to attend a Victorian Football Association match between the new club Waverley and Camberwell. To my surprise Railway Pde South, as it was then called, was deserted when I walked out of the station. My surprise was such that while chatting with Camberwell rover Bob Gibson before the game I said I had half expected to see the local sheriff strolling along the street because it reminded me of a deserted Wild West town.
