Synopsis

BACON curing, along with brickmaking, was an early industry at both Preston and Dandenong. Pockets of Preston where bacon curing took place became known colloquially as Porktown, while Bricktown and Tantown were names describing other local productivity. Both Preston and Dandenong developed as working-class communities and have remained that way. Pastimes such as football have always been popular with these communities and it’s not surprising both eventually gained representation in the Victorian Football Association. Although Preston pre-dated Dandenong’s membership by many years, it attained much of its success at the same time Dandenong made a name for itself.
Dandenong met Preston in more games ─ 61 ─ than any other opponent during its 37 seasons in the VFA; six of these encounters being finals. One match, the 1971 Grand Final, was among the most famous played in the Association’s long history. Preston’s edge in the latter years of competition between the pair enabled it to finish with 32 wins to 28 plus one draw. Overall, the record was always an even one.
