In 1884 at the age of 18, Duncan Puckle was sent by his uncles from England to New Zealand to work on the sheep farm of a family friend. Within four years he had bought his own sheep farm in Pahiatua in the North Island. He became a well known and respected – if somewhat opinionated – figure in the community. Gertrude, who became Duncan’s wife, had lived in New Zealand from the age of two - her parents had migrated from Wales in 1876. A talented writer, actress, pianist and singer, she had a relationship with Henry Lawson in her early twenties and seems to have ‘carried a candle’ for him until – and indeed after – his death. This story follows the experiences of middle class migrants in New Zealand in the late nineteenth century and, in Australia, in the early years of the twentieth. A book has been written about Duncan’s demented father, Frederick Payne Puckle, The Puckle Project: Finding Frederick, (2013).
About the Author Truda Olson has an honours arts degree, a graduate diploma in Librarianship and a Master of Information Management degree. She worked as a university librarian until retirement. She lives in Melbourne, Australia.
