Description
Kagami biraki refers to a traditional Japanese ceremony held on January 11th. It translates as "Opening of the mirror", from an abstinence, or breaking of the mochi, (traditional new year rice cake). Also it means the opening of a sake cask at a party. This ceremony can be performed to celebrate anything in Japan.

There is a mallet included, which "breaks" the top of the barrel. Actually the lid of the barrel comes in pieces to keep it neat!

Kagami is the name of the lid of the barrel. Komo Taru is the name of a large straw covered sake barrel. You can put secret gifts inside the barrel. Traditionally the sake inside was shared amongst the party. Now you can use these barrels to put gifts to be shared.
