3 x bottles of 2009 Petaluma Piccadilly SA Chardonnay

A refined fruit driven wine with barrel ferment complexity and sublime minerality. Petaluma harvests Chardonnay from seven distinguished sites in the Piccadilly Valley, blessed by a cool, slow ripening climate with growing conditions very similar to Burgundy. Soils are free draining, aerobic red over Cambrian shales. These splendid sites are closely spaced with vertical canopies and are fastidiously managed through shoot and fruit thinning to achieve very modest crop levels of five or seven tonnes per hectare.
Grapes are hand-picked, bunches are gently de-stemmed and crushed before chilling and pressing. The lightly pressed, free run juice is cold settled before being transferred to a combination of new and prior use French oak barrique coopered by Darguld et Jaegle, from the forest of Vosges, for fermentation initiated by Petaluma native yeast strain. At sugar dryness, the barrels were gently topped, and the yeast lees stirred weekly until malolactic fermentation was complete. A small portion was sulphured early without any malolactic. The components are then settled before racking and the final assembly. A very soft milk fining precedes bottling after a number of months ageing in barrique.
Bright, light straw colour.  A refined, ripe, fruit driven wine with sublime minerality. Ripe nectarine and white peach aromas and flavours are complemented by soft, gently smoky bacon nuances derived from the barrel fermentation. The texture is pure Piccadilly Chardonnay, viscous without oiliness, leading to a dry finish without hardness.
3 x bottles of 2009 Stella Bella Margaret River WA Chardonnay

The most critical site selection is applied to vineyard sites for growing Stella Bella Chardonnay. Each location adds to the complexity of the wine due to the soils, aspects, clones and microclimates unique to the respective sites. Applied to this rich collection of unique vineyards is the inspiration and skill of our winemaking team that draws upon traditional Burgundian winemaking methods and the use of fine grain French oak to craft a layered, flavoursome and complex wine with the capacity to age gracefully.

Appearance: Limpid white gold with green flashes

Aroma: Astonishing intensity and complexity. Aromas of stonefruits, cashew, white flowers, honey, creme brulee, hay, mealy nuances and struck flint, all cascade from the glass.

Palate: The palate is savoury and deep, gently viscous with a soft round mouthfeel showing nutty figgy flavours with a citrus twist. Perfectly integrated fine-grained oak sits gently in the background providing a gentle seasoning of spice and hints of custard. Natural acidity is fine and on point, providing a spark of grapefruit. Restrained and with great finesse, the wine has line, and impressive persistence of flavour.

3 x bottles of 2009 Austins Geelong Victorian Chardonnay
AUSTINS Chardonnay 2009

Austins is the pinnacle of achievement within the family’s philosophy.  These wines represent the ultimate attainable from an understanding of site and terrior, the needs of the vine and a winemaking expertise in which less is more.  As a result, Austins Pinot Noir is a consistent trophy winner.
As is the case across the Austins portfolio, this Chardonnay is about the fruit.  Richard and Pam Austin believe find food calls for wines that work in unison with flavor rather than dominate.  It is this focus on refinement and finesse that is the core strength of Austins.
Austin Wines rated 5 stars in James Halliday Australain Wine Companion 2011
Austins Chardonnay 2008 received 94 points.
Appearance – Light gold, polished and brilliant in the glass.
Aroma – The wine lifts into the senses, fresh and vibrant with the promise of a full-length palate.  An aroma of delicate fruits, citrus, honey-dew and rock melon, with an appealing mineral edge.  The bouquet is complex, layered and restrained; a touch of biscuit and nut-like character supported by light oak complex the back palate and gently dominate the fruit.
Palate – The wine runs long and lean on the tongue.  Melon and citrus flavours and a mineral freshness in harmony with back palate, biscuit nuttiness.  The back palate lightly dominates the foreground fruit in a delicious example of seductive, cool climate, Geelong elegance and a wine at the forefront of style.
