“Each of the bands on this sampler represent ribbons which would have been worn by the women of the Island of Marken in Holland during previous centuries.  They were never very visible as they were usually worn under their bonnets.

These ribbons were known as the Vernaaide Linten and were Always embroidered in black on a white material.”
